Job Life 101: Tell Me Something About Yourself

So yesterday I went out for a job interview. For some people, this might be one of the most terrifying things that they have to face. It's easy to let your nerves get the best of you and the bad part is you'll lose all your confidence and train of thought if you succumb to the nervousness. Good thing I was able to calm my self down, take a deep breath and just feel that I am having a casual conversation with a stranger.

Anyway, one of the most annoying questions that can ever be thrown to an interviewee is "TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF". This is probably the most asked question and because of that, you have to be prepared with what you will answer. I find that this question is annoying for the reason that it is very broad and general and you don't know where to start. I usually find myself lost, speechless and start blurting random things about myself. You do not want to do the same mistake that I did. So what are you going to tell the interviewer when he/ she throws you this question?

1. First of all, before going to the interview it is imperative that you research about the company and the position you are applying for. This will give you an idea about the skills that the company needs and if it matches you. You can start sharing your technical skills (such as if you know how to use Photoshop or you're in to photography).  Basically you would want to highlight your skills and sell yourself.

2. Aside from your skills, share your passions or your interests. This will make you more interesting and give you more substance as a person. What makes you tick? What are you passionate about? However, keep in mind to align your answers to what appeals to the company and to the interviewer.

3. Compose everything that you need to say in an effective elevator pitch. It is basically a 30 seconds to 1 minute description of yourself. This will really help to make you appear more smart and articulate.

These are just some short tips to get you prepared for that dreaded interview question. With that, I myself will have to start drafting my elevator pitch.
